Firefox Friday - not such a great week for the Fox, but the future looks good3 September 2010, 3:30 pm
Filed under: Features, Mozilla, BrowsersHi there, Firefox fans. The esteemed Mr. Anthony is out this weekend, so I'm your host for today's Firefox Friday. Sad to say, things aren't looking too fantastic for Firefox at the moment.
Before he left, Sebastian ran a comparison of the hardware acceleration in modern browsers, and Mozilla's baby was lagging in last place. Browser growth was also stagnant for Firefox in August, according to this month's numbers.
There might be brighter times on the h...

5 great content discovery sites which aren't Digg2 September 2010, 2:00 pm
Filed under: Features, Social Software, web 2.0, ListsDespite what you may have heard in the last two weeks, Digg is not dead. It is, however, a very different service than when it started. What used to be a great place to find interesting links and hilarious commentary has become, for almost all intents and purposes, a Twitter clone.
Digg isn't about to shut its doors, but I do get the feeling that regular, loyal Diggers are looking to take their custom elsewhere. Judging by the 'Reddit incide...

Twitter Tuesday -- OAuth is here, password-based authentication is dead31 August 2010, 3:00 pm
Filed under: Features, Web services, Social Software, Microblogging, Twitter
Big changes for third-party apps on Twitter today: they can no longer require you to log in with your Twitter password. Twitter's mandatory switch to OAuth authentication has finally happened, which means you have more control over which apps can access your account.
In case you've never signed into a Twitter app with OAuth, here's how it works: you click to sign in, and get redirected to Twitter, where you'll see "ap...

Gain a superpower by learning to touch-type - Back to School31 August 2010, 12:00 pm
Filed under: FeaturesIf you're a fan of life hacks of any kind and you can't touch-type, you're wasting your time. Just like the best current upgrade you can give your computer in terms of overall speed improvement is a solid-state drive, the best overall speed improvement you can give yourself when it comes to the time you spend on a computer is the ability to touch-type. I'm not kidding, and if you're skeptical I intend to convince you.
For our Back-to-School series, I really wanted to write a...

DLS Review: IDriveSync is a cheaper, more powerful, Dropbox competitor for Windows25 August 2010, 12:00 pm
Filed under: Utilities, Features, Productivity, web 2.0
I'm an avid Dropbox fan. I've been using it for a long time now, and it's one of a handful of applications that I think of as "mission critical" on my system.
But there are a couple of things that have always irked me about Dropbox. First and foremost, there are the rates. It's US$9.99/month for 50GB. Really? With online backup solutions such as Backblaze and Mozy offering unlimited storage for just $5/month, Dropbox's price tag seems quite...

Twitter Tuesday -- Twitter becomes the last Web service to get a bookmarklet24 August 2010, 3:00 pm
Filed under: Features, Web services, Microblogging, Twitter
Twitter is finally getting on board the bookmarklet bus, about a million years after every other Web service and URL shortener in the megaverse. You can now add a button to your browser's bookmarks bar that allows you to quickly shorten a URL using the little-hyped t.co shortener. Gee, I wish bit.ly would have thought of that ... oh, wait, they already did.
I'm perplexed by the little ways in which Twitter continues to thwart its very...

Why can't Apple's Ping sing?2 September 2010, 12:08 pm
By Joe Wilcox, Betanews
Is Apple going to compel me to write another "I was wrong post?" Yesterday I extolled Ping -- Apple's new social music discovery tool -- based on features and product strategy. Finally, late last night, Apple widely distributed iTunes 10, giving me the chance to finally use Ping. The results aren't good. The discovery tool is simply useless, because Ping doesn't reflect my current music listening habits. One of Ping's most important personal features is "What I Like." It c...
